Stephanie Chaban
Political and non-Political Violence against Palestinian Women

Stephanie Chaban has just returned from a two year assignment as program manager with the Palestinian Women's Research & Documentation Center in Ramallah, Palestinian Authority. She has also worked with UNESCO Ramallah, as a research consultant on gender-based violence. Stephanie has six years of international and domestic experience working on behalf of women and girls with significant research, advocacy, legal, and clinical responsibilities focused on conflict-affected and displaced populations.

Huma Ahmed-Ghosh

Gendered Violence and Conflict in Afghanistan

Huma Ahmed-Ghosh from San Diego State University is currently an Endowed Chair in Women's Studies at Brooklyn College. Her research focuses on women in Afghanistan, Muslim immigrant women to the USA, and Islam and feminism. Ahmed-Ghosh travels frequently to Afghanistan where she is looking at how Afghan women-run non-government organizations strategize women's rights within an Islamic state.

A 2005 Turkish film written and directed by Çağan Irmak, Babam ve Oğlum was seen by four million cinemagoers, making it one of the most successful movies in Turkish box-office history. The protagonist, Sadik, was politically active as a university student and became a left-wing journalist in the 1970's, despite his father's expectations of his becoming an agricultural engineer and taking control of their family farm in an Aegean village. The film traces Sadik's return to his village with his son Deniz after a long-lasting period of torture, trials, and jail time, his attempts to correct things with his father Huseyin, and the secret that he has been harboring.

Dr. Babak Rahimi, Professor of Iranian and Islamic Studies, UCSD, will discuss his first-hand experience of the summer's events in Iran
